The matter of nits

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-news/nits-dilemma-a-head-scratcher-for-schools/story-fn7x8me2-1226280996378

This is an article from the Herald Sun, which says Victorian schools are discriminating against children with nits, by sending them home, when they are detected.  Apparantly this is against the rules, the Victorian school board says no.

I don't know about you, but I don't think I would like a child sitting next to mine who is infested with nits.  This isn't anything against the child, the child might be a lovely child, the family might be great, I just don't want the hassle of having to treat for nits.

It was only last weekend that I noticed Peter had nits.  Now he had gone through all of the school holidays without any nits.  Then within the first three weeks back at school, bam, he is infested.  It's a little easier to treat my son, as he likes a shaved head.  So off came the hair.  But if he didn't, I wouldn't send my child to school until the infestation was gone.

I remember getting nits when I was at school, and I remember having that revolting hair shampoo, that burnt your eyes and having to stay home until they were gone.

Why the change?

What do you all think of this? I was so offended when Peter first got nits.  In his three years of schooling in Melbourne we had never had any nit infestation, his older brothers (touch wood) still to this day have never had nits, then within the first year of us moving to Bendigo, Peter was infested.  I was horrified.  How could MY child get nits?

And since this first offending infestation, Peter has on average got nits every few months.  Except over school holidays.  Obviously there is a family that isn't treating their child for nits.  So wouldn't it stand to reason that if the school was given the power to be able to send a child home and ask the family not to let them back until the nits were gone, that the family might then do something about it?

So what do you think? Are the schools doing the right thing by sending nit infested children home? Or should the kids just get a note saying they are infested? Which may or may not end up actually be given or listened to by the parent.

Love you all

Sam
