I have a guilty confession....
I'm obessed with those beauty shows, the ones where already beautiful women go in to have procedures done that aren't necessary... I think the only reason I like to watch them is because it annoys me... it's like a love hate relationship.
These shows though get me wondering, what are we doing to our faces and bodies in the name of beauty? I read a report lately where it said young women are dying their hair grey, and I noticed that Kelly Osbourne had her hair dyed grey.... why? I mean it's great for me, it means I'm finally trendy!! But what is the world coming to when young women want to look like old women and old women want to look like young women??
I am also obsessed with a show called "Dance Moms". It's really a horrible show, but I can't stop watching it. On the episode I saw last night, one of the mums were turning 40, so another mum said to her, that she should go and get botox, because it's at 40 that women should start to look at preventatives to getting old...
I have to say, I love my wrinkles!! They tell a story, the crease in my forehead, tells of three boys, that I frown at, the wrinkles around my eyes says I smile a lot. So I'm not quite understanding why anyone would want to take those away.
Anyway it lead me on a bit of research as to what injectables we can get to make our "old saggy" faces look youthful again. This is what I found.
Botox or medically known as Botulinum Toxin Type A - "Doctors use botulinum toxin Type A to treat medical conditions, including facial tics, muscle spasms and excessive sweating. In Australia, the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin Type A is restricted to the treatment of frown lines between the eyebrows. Botulinum toxin Type A is currently available in Australia under the brand names Botox® and Dysport®.
Any other cosmetic use is not approved and becomes the responsibility of the treating doctor. It is not uncommon for medications to be used to treat conditions for which they have not been approved. However, the implications of this should be explained to the patient at the time of prescription." (Victorian Government, Better Health)
Dermal Fillers include collagen, Hyaluronic Acid, Polylactic Acid, Polyacrylamide, Fat injections.
I didn't know what some of these were so looked them up this is what I found:
Hyaluronic Acid, is found naturally in the eyes and bones, and it is extracted from Rooster combs, it is used as an upper filler for the lips, however, was first used to treat ailments such as Osteoarthritis. it should be not used by pregnant women or breast feeding women.
Polylactic Acid, is the base ingredient used to make plastic cups and plates. They use this in plastic surgery to encourage the body to increase it's own collagen.
Polyacrylamide, in the building industry is used to reduce erosion on machinary. So that's good our bodies wont become rusty!! In plastic surgery it is used to pump out the wrinkles.
These are just things that you inject into your face, there are abrasive scrubs to take the top layer of skin off your body, there are laser treatments to remove fine lines. All using some form or chemical.
Is it worth putting these chemicals, that are used to making plastic and to stop erosion on machinery into our bodies?
And how young is too young?
On one particular show, there was a woman who was only 25. How many wrinkles can you honestly have at 25?
So is it that we are living in a vain world? Is it that society has this unrealistic view on what perfection is? And what is it teaching to our children?
Are we teaching our children, that you can fix everything with a little plastic surgery? Don't get me wrong, I'm not against plastic surgery, there are people that have had horrific accidents, or are born with problems that they want to have fixed. But when does it cross that line into vain?
I remember a few years ago reading a story about an Australian couple who had a little girl with down syndrome, and they wanted to have her facial features altered so that she would look more "normal". I could understand where they are coming from, because speaking from experience, having a child that has something wrong with them, is hard. You are always fearful of nasty comments, and bullying. But often we are more scared about it than the child is.
So is this something we should do? Should we as parents be allowed to alter our childrens appearances because they don't look like what we consider to be normal? If our children become overweight, should we be allowed to get them liposuction? If they have their fathers nose, should we be allowed to alter it? Do we allow our thirteen year old daughter get breast implants, because she has the smallest boobs in her class?
I don't think we should. But I would love to hear your perspectives.
Love you all
Sam
